The role of self-reported physical activity in the relationship between exercise and depression.
The purpose of this study was to examine the association between exercise and depression, while accounting for self-reported physical activity levels. Study 1 used cross-sectional data from the Canadian Community Health Survey 1.2 (Cycle 2.1; Cycle 2.2) from 2004 to 2010 (n=12,435) to examine the association between exercise and depression. Study 2 was a longitudinal study that examined how exercise and self-reported physical activity levels were associated with depression (n=4181) and to whether physical activity levels mediated the association between exercise and depression. Study 1 found no association between exercise and depression among men or women. In Study 2, when physical activity levels were examined as a mediator, the association between exercise and depression was mediated. The findings of Study 2 demonstrate that physical activity has a negative association with depression and that self-reported physical activity levels mediate the association between exercise and depression.[Cushing's disease: diagnosis, etiology and treatment].
Cushing's disease is a rare disease, that occurs in less than 1-2 cases per million people per year. Cushing's disease is more common in women and affects middle-aged persons. The etiology is an ACTH-producing adenoma of the pituitary gland. We use the following evaluation of Cushing's disease: clinical examination, endocrine investigations, MRI of the pituitary gland, 99mTc-TRODAT1-SPECT, 99mTc-HYNIC-TOC-SPECT, and arginine vasopressin testing. Treatment of Cushing's disease is surgery. Although remission is obtained in 95-99% of cases after surgery, recurrence of disease occurs in 25-33% of patients. About a quarter of the recurrences occur within the first year after the first surgery, and the rest within the next 5 years.
